The theme for 2022 is Metrology in the Digital Era.

It's been a while since we’ve been able to welcome large customer groups to Gracefield Innovation Quarter in Lower Hutt. We see this as a wonderful opportunity for you to reconnect, to hear some informative talks, to network with other stakeholders and to tour some of our new and not so new laboratories. As usual, we plan to end the day with the Metrology Society of Australasia (MSA) networking hour.

Now that Covid restrictions have relaxed, we invite you to join us for the whole day or virtually until 2:10 pm. The event is free and spaces will be limited on site, so please register now to confirm your place.

Talks will include: MSL's Blair Hall speaking about digital transformation in international scientific and quality infrastructure; Vladimir Bubanja speaking about quantum metrology and quantum technologies; the MSA will announce the inaugural winners of the Emerging Metrologists of the Year.

World Metrology Day celebrates the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875. This treaty provides the international measurement system that underpins scientific research and innovation, industrial processing and manufacturing, international commerce and trade, not to mention improvements to the quality of life and protection of the global environment.

The 2022 theme, Metrology in the Digital Era, was chosen because digital technology is revolutionising our lives, and is one of the most exciting trends in society today.

Across the world, national metrology institutes continually advance measurement science by developing and validating new measurement techniques at the necessary level of sophistication. The national metrology institutes participate in measurement comparisons coordinated by the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) to ensure the reliability of measurement results worldwide.

The International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) develops International Recommendations, which aim to align and harmonise requirements worldwide in many fields. The OIML also operates the OIML Certification System (OIML-CS) which facilitates international acceptance and global trade of regulated measuring instruments.

These international metrology systems provide the necessary assurance and confidence that measurements are accurate, providing a sound basis for global trade today and helping us to prepare for the challenges of tomorrow.

World Metrology Day recognises and celebrates the contribution of all the people that work in intergovernmental, national and local metrology organisations and laboratories throughout the year.
